Sonic is still good for meaning fast. It's "quantum" that is confused, and actually a miniscule number, not a great or fast number.
Yes, I do remember those manual typewriters in school! The carbon ribbons that filled all the circles in the letters, and had to be cleaned regularly. I'd already turned in twice the work the class had, and didn't feel like doing yet another timed paper. My teacher insisted I "needed the practice".... I really didn't. So with my trusty straight pin (from Home Ec) I began cleaning out those carbon-filled keys and complained about the "filthy machines" we had to use. He wrote in his grade book (I peeked) not that I was being belligerent, but that I "took very good care of the school equipment"! 🙄 My friend would "throw" the return carriage, and pretend to "catch it" twice as far as it went back...really funny to see. I really loved High School! I had good grades in spite of my goofing around. Pantomiming crazy things with her was a lot of fun. She was my BFF since Kindergarten, and we still are good friends today.
I never saw an electric typewriter til my first job. In the first month, springs, keys, and typewriter bits would be flying and have to be repaired/replaced. It wasn't til my 4th typewriter that I managed to curb the heavy touch from my high school typing habits.
Despite today's technology, people have forgotten how to spell, regardless of how well we used to have to know English.
And cashiers are not ashamed of not knowing how to count change when their computerized cash register loses power. They say with a smile, "I never did good in math". We asked how they got past the 3rd grade! That's when we learned it.
My grandson once sent me an email....I asked him to please use punctuation, capitals, no texting abbreviations, and spaces between words. I couldn't translate his message into anything. That was a decade ago. I have yet to receive an email from him again. 😜
