  • Is it worse to be licked or sneezed on?

    (Either way, it's gross!)

Different diseases affect different fluids in the body, so it’s hard to give a simple answer to this question. HIV, for example, shows up at infectious levels in blood, semen, vaginal and rectal secretions, and breast milk. But an HIV-infected patient’s sneeze or spit poses very little danger. On the other hand, the germs that cause conjunctivitis, or “pink eye,” come out in tears, and the virus responsible for mononucleosis swims around in the saliva.

If we limit the discussion to our most common germs, spit turns out to be relatively harmless. Rhinovirus, which causes up to half of all colds, multiplies in the cells that line the nose and upper respiratory tract. As a result, the easiest way to transmit a cold is through nasal mucus. “You can get some virus out in saliva, but you’d have to work real hard,” says J. Owen Hendley, professor of pediatric infectious disease at the University of Virginia. He cites one study where even prolonged “soul kissing” didn’t transmit rhinovirus. Getting sneezed on isn’t so bad either, since people sneeze mostly from their mouths.

Other respiratory illnesses have their own modes of transmission. Influenza, for example, tends to dig into the lungs. As a result, a cough may aerosolize the virus. “If I were splashed in the face with something at the hospital,” says John Lynch, professor and director of an infectious disease clinic at the University of Washington School of Medicine, “I’d be most worried about the respiratory sample.”

Short answer: Snot is worse than spit.

Wonder if this has changed the laws that make it "attempted murder" or "bodily assault" in some states if a person who is HIV positive spits on someone?

Can guys get arrested for hawking out mucus on the sidewalks? I've never seen women doing that. But I thought it was terribly gross. When I was a girl, I'd see boys imitating the old men who did it.

JoG ....to me the guys who hack and spit on the walks. parking lots. streets. anywhere.. (except their hankerchief or a trash container.. are the most disgusting creatures... no regard for the rest of us ...I would prefer to step on some dog dodo ..altho' thats pretty disgusting too.. at least the poor dog is only doing what is natural to him... and don't know any better .. where as the spitter does know better.

snot is worse than spit... hummmmm ,, got to agree with that one !.. we all have it. .but mine is not as nasty as yours....
Take it one Day , one step, at a time.. cause that's all we really have.

Aunt Maye speaking along the line of we all have it. Have you noticed that if a child you are close to throws up on you it isn't nearly as bad as if one you don't know/or barely know does? Also if they are your close family member and give you a "snotty" or "drooling" kiss you accept but is they aren't someone close to you, you won't? My handicapped niece drooled all the time and very rarely decided that she wanted to give anyone a kiss, so when she grabbed any of us for one we all willing accepted it drool and all.

And JoG, I think there are laws on the books in some places it is all a matter of enforcement like any other law that is there and the police don't want to deal with the paper work so just look the other way.
