  • Please help me to identify

Last week I saw a snake in my yard. It looked like a Black Garter Snake, but I'm not sure. It was very thin, about 2 ft long and it was super fast. There was a bird chasing it and fussing at it. The snake had it's head up most of the time and it shook it's tail like a rattler, but I didn't see any buttons and it had round eyes instead of elliptical so that is a non-poisonous right? I am not sure, but it was odd about the snake and the bird. It seems they were tagging each other or something.

Poisonous snakes usually have a triangular shapped head I've noticed. You need an expert on snakes though to tell you if it is poisonous or not.

There are several snakes but my guess would be a black racer or an Eastern Indigo.

This site has a lot of snakes found in Florida, maybe you'll be able to identify it.

My first thought was a racer (we had blue ones back home). The reason is the playing tag which they are very good at. They are harmless but scarey the first time one chases you, as long as you "run" they will keep chasing. When you stop they stop, if you stamp your foot at it and start towards it, it will turn and run from you until you stop. My brother used to love to come across one in the field and would have to stop what he was doing and play with it for awhile.
