    The other day we saw a bird that's never been here before.
    It had black feathers, and was about the size of a robin. It had an orange-red flash of feathers low on its breast by his legs. No other colors on it.
    I've tried looking it up, but there are just too many birds in the lists not even close to what this looked like.

      JoG, it might be a Lewis' woodpecker. If you see one again, check to see if it has a gray collar and a deep red face patch. The face patch may be hard to see because of the darkness of it.

        No, I looked that up when I read your post, and it's definitely not it. The woodpecker has too much red (and white) on it.
