  • Termites

Guess what I found while digging around in one of my raised beds today? Yep, you guessed it, mean ole termites, by the hundreds. I had 2 wooden raised beds that were infected. I tore out all the raised beds and threw them away. I sprayed the termites with Hot Shot Home Insect Control.

I was just exhausted when I was finished. DH could not help me either because of his surgery. I had to lift the soil out of the beds with a spade and 5 gal bucket. When I started lifting the soil out the termites went to the bottom and were hiding in that very bottom part.

I will continue to spray and treat that area, but I had to quit and come in because it started raining so hard. I was too tired to do anymore work anyway and I got almost all of the wood carried to the curb so it was time to quit. The wood that's left in the backyard is not infected, but I will not take a chance on that type of garden anymore and just as soon as I can that's going to the curb too.

To say I'm devastated would be an understatement. I should have known this would happen.

Karlinann, you can get boards made out of rubber (recycled tires), or other artificial materials for raised bed gardening.
If you use wood, it needs to be a treated wood.
You may have to call a termite control specialist who can get down deep enough to eliminate those critters and can be sure they don't get to your house!
