  • Any new annuals?

Is anyone planting any new annuals this year? I just got a box from Michigan Bulb with an assortment of lilies & grasses that I plan to plant either along the front of the house or around one of the trees.

No annuals for me......has to be perennials so I don't have to mess with them each spring. Just do a little Happy Dance whenever they peep their little heads up through the winter ground.

Grasses and lillies - annuals ? Aren't those usually in the perennial category ? I love the grasses, but don't have enough sunshine to grow them well.....too many big old Oak trees.
There is a difference between giving up and knowing when you've had enough......

I usually plant the same annuals every year. Although, I must say I'm getting tired of the same flowers each year. For the last 5-6 years, I've planted my flowers in pots. Got tired and too old to keep getting down on my knees pulling weeds out of flower beds. Now I just squirt the weeds with weed killer.
Life is to be enjoyed, not just endured.

That's what I meant...perennials. I'm not a regular gardening gal & hate dealing with annuals.

No. Most decorative plants, annual or otherwise, wither away - summer's heat is harsh.
          The sun is very unforgiving.

One place I plant (veggies), is my original little garden plot. This morning I moved half the dirt over, added shredded paper, and as I recovered that half with the dirt I moved I also moved the dirt over and added shredded paper, then raked half the dirt back over it. Then I had to rest and cool off. It took me an hour to do that. I still have fresh dirt to put on top. Then I start the seeds. Oh, I began by removing the soaker hoses; I'll put them back later tonight or tomorrow.
Dh still has to build the over-the-top shader that I need to keep the plants cooler.

I did buy a rose bush, still in it's original container. Not sure where to plant it yet. The berm is not protected from the sun, as the tree that covered part of it hasn't recuperated from the deep freeze we had at the end of winter. Not sure if it will. So I have to determine a shadier spot next to the house. It may end up being a big-container plant.

Kenny keeps looking at rose bushes, told him that I really don't want to mess with one now, they take so long to grow and don't move well. With not being sure how long we will be here (when his Mom passes we will sell out and get out of this area, and her health seems to be failing fast). All of my bulbs can just be dug up and moved. I have Iris that come up every year but for some reason refuse to blume. My Irises, peonies, naked ladies and hostas are all peeking through. Two of my peonies are starts from a bush my Granny planted in the late 20's early 30's, that I dug up and brought back. I also brought part of the naked ladies back at that time (the others are transplants from my Mom's that she had given my X sister-in-law many years ago, we laughed because they started in IL, moved to NE and now are in IN)

Not sure about planting this year....have this large dog...(Duke) who waters everything...and eventually kills the plants.... This year I may buy couple of tall benches...I can place baskets on with flowers planted in them on my patio...hopefully Duke can't reach..... Irritating...but he does not listen to me...anything we put up to deter him...does not work... He even waters the grill cover when it is left on the ground...

Had an older lady tell me right after I came up here that the annuals are just a trick for the seed companys to get your money. Her yard is full of them and she said she hasn't bought seeds for years. The trick is to when they stop blooming let them go to seed, when the plant is dead, pull it up and shake it back into your flower bed and the seeds will replant themselves. You just have to deal with the ugly of a dying plant for a bit.

I hear you on that Mickie. We have stray cats that love to spray to mark their territories. I would love to plant a few tomato plants but don't want to have the darn cats spraying my food!

Well, in my new state of being, there's no way I can garden like I used to. James will move some of my lilies up in front of the new deck. I have several large pots on the deck and may get some pots of annuals to put on each side of the steps.....they were built with that in mind so there's plenty of space...they are sort of fan shaped. I will have my usual 2 hanging tomato plants at the side of the deck and humming bird feeders along the front. That will be my garden. I have several perenials that I won't move...grape vine, climatis and roses mostly. I am happy with this, have learned to accept my limitations.
Good friends are like diamonds...precious and rare.

I would build my own benches...if I thought I could.... would probably have to make a bracket or some sort of raised piece to hold the planters....might end of doing something like that....with the help of my son Matt ...
