first your piano should never be tight against a wall.. always have about 3 " or more away.. for tone.. and to keep any chance of moisture away..
and NO .. all the work on a piano ( upright) is done with removing the top. the whole front should come right off including the lid that covers the keys.. .. and the front under the keyboard comes off to see the condition of the strings and pedals .. if it is baby grand style.. tuner can remove the top and would want to walk around it. ...... everything setting On the top of piano has to be moved of course..
you just reminded me... I do want to get my piano tuned... with only a few kids playing now .. I 'm not as fussy... but was not happy with the last tuner and have no more names on my list of who to call..... I will ask at the big music store in Town who the owner would recommend... sadly my piano is 48 yrs old .. been used and used... and has some weaknesses.. like the bottom 4-5 low low keys will not stay in tune and the very top octave also loses true tone too.. but I don't mind . just need the middle to sound good.
